Section 179 and Year-End Tax Savings: Why Office Furniture Bought Now Pays Off in April

Office furniture is one of the most straightforward business deductions available, and the fourth quarter is when smart buyers act on it. Section 179 of the tax code lets many businesses deduct the full purchase price of qualifying furniture and equipment in the year it is placed in service, rather than depreciating it over seven years. If your firm has had a good 2026 and a tired office, those two facts belong in the same conversation.

The usual disclaimer applies and it matters: we sell furniture, not tax advice. Confirm everything here with your CPA before you buy.

How the Deduction Works in Plain Terms

Under Section 179, a business can elect to expense qualifying purchases, including office furniture, up to a generous annual limit that adjusts each year. Bonus depreciation can apply beyond that. The key mechanics for furniture buyers: the furniture must be purchased and placed in service by December 31 to count against this tax year. A signed purchase order alone does not cut it. The desks need to be in your office, assembled, and in use.

Why That Deadline Points at October

Here is where tax planning meets lead times. Much commercial furniture is built to order and takes four to eight weeks or more to arrive, plus installation. Order in October and your project lands comfortably inside the year. Wait until after Thanksgiving and you are limited to quick-ship and in-stock product, racing freight schedules and holiday closures to get everything placed in service before the calendar flips. The deduction is the same either way, but the selection is not.

What Qualifies

Desks, workstations, seating, conference tables, filing and storage, reception furniture, and height-adjustable standing desks generally qualify as tangible personal property used in a trade or business. New and used furniture can both qualify, which makes remanufactured workstations a double win: lower price and the same expensing treatment. Your CPA will confirm the specifics for your entity and state.

Make It a Plan, Not a Scramble

The best year-end furniture purchases start with a real need: chairs past their lifespan, a reconfiguration that never happened, an expansion that has people doubled up. Walk the office, list what genuinely needs replacing, and price it now. Then the tax benefit becomes a discount on something you needed anyway, rather than a reason to buy things you did not.
